Come and Walk

In a time with grave economic and social crisis around the country, the municipality of Lamego developed a regular program specially devoted to the elderly that seeks to engage in healthy leisure and raise their levels of self esteem.

The Senior Project “ConVida” mobilizes women and men over 60 years to practice a wide range of activities like aerobics, hiking, meetings, dancing, and memory games. The full integration of more than three hundred seniors helps relieve the loneliness that many are doomed to end a long working life and bridge the shortfall in social responses specific to this population group.

Recently,a wider range of physical activities, particularly with regard to monthly walking and gatherings, were provided with the involvement of the Municipal Center for Walk and Run of Lamego.

Some of the elderly who already exceed 80 years of age, which participation is only possible due to collaboration and some technical support of people with specific knowledge. Under this initiative the elderly no longer are seen as “retired” and are given value to the enormous life experience accumulated.

Over the next two months, the Center of Walk and Run of Lamego wants to encourage people of all ages to put on comfortable tennis shoes and go for a walk on the street as well as gather around with other people.

The first journey of this program happened in the parish of Valdigem with the active participation of many women and men from various parts of the municipality. Those who walked, lived and learned a little of the rich history of that town, with a visit to the magnificent Chapel of Holly Lady. The initiative terminated with a series of stretching to provide a faster recovery and relaxation as a result of the efforts made.

The project “ConVida a caminhar” promises to continue through the parishes of Lamego, encouraging the practice of outdoor exercise and permanent contact with nature. Walking is one of the main activities to improve the health of humans, keep in shape, control weight and recover from periods of low motivation.
