I have over 40 years of teaching experience in a wide variety of physical activities. I have also worked as a consultant with breast cancer survivors and the obese. The purpose of this technical paper is to introduce a unique exercise teaching manual entitled Focus on Wellness: Therapeutic Exercise for Seniors 65 plus.
During 6 years of experimenting with traditional exercises, I have adapted the majority of them to integrate the concepts of a holistic wellness approach to aging actively. We are experiencing a new frontier in the concept of aging because we are living longer and our expectations of being active over a lifetime have become a reality. Research shows that regular exercise is essential to an active life style. The exercises explained in the manual are done primarily sitting in chairs but with parts of the program standing, using the wall or chair for support. Hand weights are also used. As interest grew in my program I saw the need for a credible source of information and training for other professionals serving the ever-growing 65 plus population. Using a binder based design, the teaching manual makes it possible to distribute periodic inserts providing new research base information concerning seniors and exercise. I consider that my technical paper most closely fits either the session dealing with physical activity programs for middle-aged and older adults or the one exploring exercise intervention for middle-aged and older adults. It may also be suitable for the session on Physical training for middle age and older adults. In a workshop environment, with volunteer participation from the audience, I would demonstrate a 45-60 min routine explaining why the 5 key exercise routines are so successful and beneficial in keeping the senior physically active.
