American Sport Education Program

American Sport Education Program
Mission: to make sport safer, more enjoyable, and more valuable for athletes by developing educational programs and resources for coaches, administrators, parents, and officials.

Training for Coaches, Officials, Sport Administrators, and Parents

ASEP is the most widely used and respected sport education program in the United States. Nearly 40 state high school athletic associations recommend or require ASEP courses for their high school coaches, and more than 200 colleges and universities use ASEP courses and resources. Collectively, more than one million people—coaches, officials, sport administrators, and parents—have used ASEP products since the program began in 1981.

ASEP’s motto of “Athletes first, winning second” is the foundation of its curriculum and the driving force behind its efforts. ASEP courses offered in the classroom and online show adults involved in youth sport how to place the physical, mental, and social development of a child before winning.

ASEP offers a multilevel educational program that mirrors the common division of youth sport in America:

ASEP Volunteer Coaches Education Program— geared toward youth coaches affiliated with parks and recreation departments and national, state, and local youth sport organizations (coaches of athletes ages 14 and under).

ASEP Professional Coaches Education Program— geared toward high school, club sport, and Olympic coaches (coaches of athletes ages 14 and over). These courses are also taught in nearly 200 colleges and universities across the country as part of coaching major and minor programs. ASEP also works with a network of colleges and universities to offer ASEP online courses to faculty-coaches for CEUs and graduate and undergraduate credit.

ASEP Officials Education Program— geared toward officials at the youth and high school levels.

Classroom and Online Courses

ASEP classroom and online courses combine interactive instruction with self-study, support by texts, videos, CDs, and tests. ASEP’s classroom courses, Coaching Principles and Sport First Aid, are taught to more than 25,000 coaches annually through a network of more than 1,000 instructors nationwide.

ASEP’s Future

ASEP has been in the sport education business for nearly 30 years, and although more than one million coaches, officials, sport administrators, and parents have participated in ASEP courses during that time, ASEP’s work is largely incomplete. More than 3.5 million coaches, nearly one million officials, 300,000 sport administrators, 80 million parents, and 30 million young athletes in the United States can benefit from ASEP’s educational courses and resources. So while ASEP is proud of its achievements, its focus is on providing the highest quality education to all who are involved in sport.
