Pedestrian-safety program breaks down barriers for outdoor activity

Older adults want to be physically active and enjoy the health, social, and utilitarian benefits of walking. But all too often, they face barriers to walking in their neighborhoods, especially if they have health problems or conditions that make it more difficult to get around. In Hendersonville, North Carolina, the Walk Wise, Drive Smart program aims to create more pedestrian-friendly environments for seniors in the community. As part of the Henderson County Livable and Senior Friendly Community Initiative, the program builds upon established community relationships and uses community input to guide improvements to the walkabilty of Hendersonville.
