In Japan, more middle-aged and elderly people are drawn to bicycling and bicycling trips. They are drawn by the chance to leisurely enjoy beautiful scenery and benefit their own health.
Tour companies are taking advantage of this opportunity to draw more older adults to their offerings. One company says that about 70 percent of participants are in their 60s or older.
About 1,430 people aged 50 to 80 were asked in a 2008 survey by the Japan Health Promotion and Fitness Foundation what types of sports or exercise they would like to try, and the largest number, 20.5 percent, said cycling.
