As the new year begins, take some time to update important documents. Do you have a written record of health problems and concerns that your children and family could develop as well?
The health history of your family can inform your family of any increased risks for developing serious health problems. The document should include common problems such as heart disease or cancer and also the less common diseases such as hemophilia or sickle cell anemia.
A health care professional can also use your family health history in recommending actions that can lower a family member’s chance of getting diseases that are a concern. Eating healthier and exercising more may be a recommendation for specific diseases, or specific tests should be administered by a physician.
