Vitamin B12 Deficiency Rises in Older Adults

Although vitamin B12 deficiency is considered rare, this deficiency is found in about 15% of older people. The rate is even higher among people who don’t eat meat, have trouble with absorption, take acid-blocking medications, or take Metformin for type 2 diabetes.
B12 is a key nutrient needed to make red blood cells and DNA. It also keeps the nervous system on track. Symptoms of B12 deficiency include anemia, depression, dementia, confusion, loss of appetite, and balance problems.
