Reduce the Risk of Death From Heart Disease With Daily Fruit and Vegetables

Data from research conducted in eight European countries shows that people who ate at least eight servings of fruit and vegetables a day were 22 percent less likely to die of ischemic heart disease than those who ate fewer than three portions a day. Ischemic heart disease is the most common form of heart disease and a leading cause of death in Europe. People with this disease have reduced blood flow to the heart, which can result in chest pain and heart attack.
The lowest intake was two portions of fruit and vegetables each day. The research shows that for each additional portion eaten, the risk of death from ischemic heart disease was reduced by 4 percent.
