What Do You Know About Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye grows cloudy. This cloudiness will continue, or vision may take on a brownish tint and colors are harder to distinguish. Cataracts are often associated with aging but can be caused by other risk factors, including the following:

  • Trauma to the eye
  • Diabetes
  • Long-term steroid use
  • Long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun
  • Smoking
  • Genetics
  • Severe long-term nearsightedness

There is a lot of misunderstanding about cataract treatment. Many eye physicians believe patients should wait until their quality of life or ability to work is affected before they seek treatment. Surgery is the only proven treatment, and 95 percent of cataract surgeries are successful and free of complications.
