Intergenerational Exchange Aims to Strengthen Relationships

By Luis Solano-Mora, Costa Rica

The intergenerational exchange held on October 26, 2009, was addressed to the older participants and to the children and adolescents at risk of drug abuse in the MOVI Program in the School of Sport Sciences, Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, located at Lagunilla, Heredia, Costa Rica. The intergenerational exchange was focused on recreational activities and intergenerational relationships between older people and younger people who participate in the MOVI program.

The activity was conducted from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The children and adolescents of the “Children and Young People in Risk of Drug Abuse Project” prepared recreational activities for the older participants of the “Modulation of the Aging Process Project.” Five different stations of activities were created, each one of them coordinated by the children and adolescents. Every 20 minutes the older participants in each group had to change stations in a previously established sequence. When all the recreational activities finished, the older participants prepared a small surprise of fruit salads in appreciation for all the activities that the kids prepared for them. After that, the coordinators of both projects gave to the kids and older people certificates of participation. Finally, the coordinators of the Projects mentioned the importance to working together to build a good aging process.
