The Active Aging Community Center is led by a steering committee made up of outstanding, dedicated professionals in the field. Committee members counsel the publisher, Human Kinetics, on how the AACC can best serve the community of researchers and professionals engaged in the active aging field.



 
Bob Barnard
Bob Barnard

Bob Barnard, MEd, is chief exercise physiologist for the Centre for Physical Activity in Ageing in Adelaide, South Australia. He has more than 30 years of experience working in the field of exercise rehabilitation. He developed an interest in special populations while studying for a master’s degree in exercise physiology in the 1990s. Barnard is a member of the National Board of the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science and is a practitioner member of the National University Course Accreditation Committee. He is president of Active Ageing South Australia, which provides advocacy, training, and services to promote active lifestyles for older adults.

 


Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko
Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko

Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, PhD, is professor and head of the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. For the past 15 years he has focused on the effect of exercise and physical activity on sensory, motor, and cognitive functioning in old age. In support of this research project, Chodzko-Zajko established ongoing longitudinal studies of exercise and aging at both Kent State University and the University of Alabama. He served on the World Health Organization’s Scientific Advisory Committee, which issued Guidelines for Physical Activity in Older Adults. Rylee Dionigi
Rylee Dionigi

Rylee Dionigi, PhD, is associate head of the School of Human Movement Studies at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. She is the author of 2008’s Competing for Life: Older People, Sport and Ageing, the first published research monograph to present extensive empirical qualitative data on the personal and cultural meanings of competitive sports participation in later life. The book offers insights to health promotion experts, sports organisers, and older athletes themselves. Ellen Freiberger
Ellen Freiberger

Ellen Freiberger, PhD, is with the Institute of Sport Science and Sport at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. Her research includes the study of interlimb motor coordination and aging, and of fall prevention in community-dwelling older adults. Since 2003, Freiberger has been a collaborating member of ProFaNE (Prevention of Falls Network Europe), and since 2006, she has served on the Steering Committee of the European Network on Action, Aging and Physical Activity (EUNAAPA). In 2007, she developed a curriculum for fall prevention instructors in Germany.

 


Bevan Grant
Bevan Grant

Bevan Grant, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. Since the early 1990s, he has taught and researched gerontology with a particular emphasis on the role and meaning of physical activity and leisure in later life. He studies the qualitative paradigm of how older people interpret and make sense out of their day-to-day experiences and considers the way policy, socio-cultural forces, and community initiatives influence lifestyle. Grant is involved with a number of organizations, including Age Concern, Retirement Village Association, Regional Sports Trusts, Masters Games, and New Zealand Gerontology Association. [More about Bevan Grant]



Gareth R. Jones
Gareth R. Jones

Gareth R. Jones, PhD, is assistant professor of Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia-Okanagan, where he delivers courses in healthy lifestyle management and program evaluation. Previously, he served as director of the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging. Jones’ primary research interest is to seek and understand the contribution and interaction of both biological and psychosocial variables that may define an older adult’s choice of occupational activities directed toward advancing active life expectancy. Jones was appointed to the National Advisory Board for the development of Canada’s Physical Activity Guide for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, an initiative of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada. Jones is the associate editor-in-chief of the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity and serves on the advisory board to UBC-Okanagan’s Research Centre for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention.

 


Ger Kroes
Ger Kroes

Ger Kroes, PhD, is a senior advisor for the Netherlands Institute for Sports and Physical Activity in Bennekom, the Netherlands. He worked as a policy advisor with the Dutch Federation of Senior Policy. He also helped found the National Foundation More Exercise for Seniors in 1980 and served as its director. In addition, Kroes served as chief editor of Oudfit, a journal for practitioners about physical activity and aging. [More about Ger Kroes]

 

 


Bob Laventure
Bob Laventure

Bob Laventure, MEd, is a consultant for the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity and Health. He leads programme development for older people and physical activity and is the author of the Active For Later Life resource. He also works with international working groups including the European HEPA and EUNAPPA programmes, among others. He is a founding member of the National Coalition for Active Ageing in England. Maria Machado
Maria Machado

Maria Machado, MS, in an invited lecturer in the faculty of Human Kinetics at Technical University of Lisbon. Her research focuses on the development of fitness programs for older adults, working with the university’s Laboratory of Biomechanics. She has also been invited to present her work in specialized scientific conferences around the world. She participated in several funded research projects and the development of fitness programs, particularly on the positive biomechanical effects of locomotion and balance, as well as assessment tools for successful aging.

 


Colin Milner
Colin Milner

Colin Milner is CEO of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. An award-winning writer, Milner has authored more than 225 articles on aging-related issues and has delivered speeches to thousands of business leaders throughout the world. Milner’s efforts have inspired a broad spectrum of industry leaders to seek his advice, including the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the Challenges of Gerontology and the National Institute on Aging.

 


Marcia Ory
Marcia Ory

Marcia G. Ory, PhD, MPH, is Regents Professor, Department of Social and Behavioral Health, School of Rural Public Health (SRPH), at The Texas A&M Health Science Center in College Station. She is also director of the SRPH Health Promotion and Aging Program. In addition, Ory is the director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-sponsored Active for Life National Program Office, where she has demonstrated that evidence-based health promotion programs can be successfully translated to both clinical and community settings. Michael Rogers
Michael Rogers

Michael Rogers, PhD, is chair of the Department of Human Performance Studies and a professor of exercise science at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan., where he teaches graduate courses in exercise physiology and aging. He is also the research director for the WSU Center for Physical Activity and Aging. His primary research interests focus on the effects of balance and strength training on older adults. Currently, he is conducting studies on the efficacy of community-based exercise programs in Wichita and Nagoya, Japan. He has more than 40 published papers and has made more than 300 presentations, regularly presenting in Europe and Asia.

 


Debra J. Rose
Debra J. Rose

Debra J. Rose, PhD, is a professor in the Division of Kinesiology and Health Science, co-director of the Center for Successful Aging, and kinesiology graduate program coordinator at California State University, Fullerton. She teaches and conducts research in the area of motor control and learning, and balance and mobility disorders, in particular. The innovative fall risk reduction program she developed was recently recognized by the National Council on Aging as one of seven programs nationwide that promotes a healthy, active lifestyle. She is a fellow of the Research Consortium of AAPHERD and past Executive Board Member of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.

 


Andiara Schwingel
Andiara Schwingel

Andiara Schwingel, PhD, is associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her professional interests include aging and life course, public health, lifestyle, and well-being of immigrants and ethnic minorities. Her research focuses on how cultural, national, and international factors impact the process of growing older around the world. Schwingel’s research has also examined the impact of transnational migration on a wide variety of health and quality of life outcomes. [More about Andiara Schwingel]

 


Dawn Skelton
Dawn Skelton

Dawn A. Skelton, PhD, is a reader/associate professor in ageing and health at Glasgow Caledonian University in Glasgow, Scotland. Her main interests lie in the prevention of dependence and the prevention of falls. She is a commissioned author for the World Health Organization Health Evidence Network, the Department of Health, and the scientific advisor for the Society for Physical Activity and the Prevention of Osteoporosis, Falls and Fractures among others. Kiyoji Tanaka
Kiyoji Tanaka

Kiyoji Tanaka, PhD, is professor in Kinesiology and Sports Medicine at the Institute of Health and Sport Sciences at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. He is also head of the Tsukuba Health Fitness Research Institute at Higashi Toride Hospital. Tanaka’s primary research interests are in the area of aging, physical activity, and exercise prescription. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. [More about Kiyoji Tanaka]

 


Anthony A. Vandervoort
Anthony A. Vandervoort

Anthony A. Vandervoort, PhD, is a professor and associate dean in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. He teaches courses on gerontology/geriatric rehabilitation and human neuromuscular function. His research focuses on the effects of aging on human neuromuscular function and the application of these findings to rehabilitation programs for older adults with mobility impairment. He also serves as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity.
