In order to promote sport among older adults, the Superior Council of Sports of the Government of Spain is preparing the General Plan of Physical Activity and Sport (GPPAS).
So far, the first version has been published, but it is not definitive. This project will be developed with the governments of the Autonomous Communities of Spain, municipalities, and universities, and with the participation of private corporations, and it will be developed during the period of 2010-2020.
The GPPAS takes into account four basic principles, which are aimed toward older adults: relation of the physical and sport activities with health; sport and its relation with education; effective equality between women and men; and the sport as an element of social cohesion. This paper provides an analysis of the current status of physical activity programs for older people in different regions of Spain. The various programs are classified according to their characteristics. Within the GPPAS there is a diagnosis of the current situation and at the end of the document, it provides some strategic guidelines to obtain the objectives.
