The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has released Exercise & Physical Activity: Your Everyday Guide from the National Institute on Aging to detail the benefits of exercise for older adults and tools for motivating them to become more physically active.
This scientifically based guide aims to improve the health and well-being of older adults. It comes 10 years after the release of the 1998 guide, Exercise: A Guide from the National Institute on Aging, to include lessons learned about physical activity and exercise for the older adult population.
The guidelines help older adults take charge of their health by educating them on the importance of physical activity and exercise, and by providing tips for how to get started, reduce risks, and reward progress. Within the guidelines are sample exercises, charts to record activities to monitor progress, and tips for getting back on track and eating healthy. In addition, inspiring personal stories are included to motivate older adults to maintain their physical activities.
