The Brazilian 2009 Ironman Triathlon took place on May 29 in Florianópolis City, South Brazil. The Ironman Triathlon is an athletic competition that consists of a 3.8-km swim, 180-km cycling and 42-km race. [read more]

In summer 2009, the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica hosted a workshop with older adults of the Movement for Life Program (MOVI), a multidisciplinary and integrated program focused on the effects of physical activity. During this one-day workshop, older adults discussed various themes such as the aging process, stereotypes and myths in older age, human movement through the Latin American dance, self-esteem and self-care, barriers to get involved with physical activity and healthy lifestyles. The Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA) was pleased to have been chosen by the International Society for Aging and Physical Activity to host the 6th World Congress on Aging and Physical Activity. [read more]

On July 1 and 2, 2009, more than 250 delegates gathered in the nation’s capital to commence drafting and implementation of the first Physical Activity Plan for the United States. Keynote addresses from former Surgeon General David Satcher and newly appointed Assistant Secretary for Health and Human Services Howard Koh established the importance of the National Physical Activity Plan as an integral part of “health system reform.” [read more]

The Third International Congress on Sport and Physical Activity for the Elderly took place March 12-14, 2009, in Malaga, Spain. It is considered the most important conference regarding sports and physical activities for elderly adults in Spain. More than 1,500 people from different European countries attended the congress, some of whom were university students. [read more]

The Agita São Paulo Program in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, organized the Celebration of the World Day for Physical Activity held on April 5. More than 30,000 people, including older adults from different communities of the city and metropolitan region of Sao Paulo, gathered in the city of Sao Paulo. [read more]

On 20 April 2009, National University of Singapore (NUS) Virtual Institute for the Study of Ageing (VISA) organized its first conference, titled "Aging well in a time of longevity." This one-day conference was the first to draw together NUS researchers from cross disciplines, including clinical, social-political, engineering, and design, for an exciting exchange of research and meeting of views on the issues of aging well.
