A training course in geriatric medicine was held in May and June 2010 as a part of a continuous medical education program for primary health care physician in ministry of health in Kingdom of Bahrain. The training was carried out by a couple of Egyptian geriatricians, Dr. Khaled Abulsaad, geriatric consultant, and Dr. Hala Sweed, assistant professor of geriatric medicine, both from the Geriatrics and Gerontology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Egypt.
The course aimed to orient primary health care physicians and medical teams about common geriatric problems and presentations of different geriatric syndromes, approach for assessment, and diagnosis and when to refer elderly to specialized clinic of geriatrics.
The training course covered the following topics: scope of geriatric medicine and preventive levels in geriatrics, comprehensive geriatric assessment, Age related physiological changes in elderly, atypical presentation of medical problems in elderly, urinary and fecal incontinence in elderly, osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures in elderly males and females, balance dysfunctions and risk of falls in elderly, nutritional problems in elderly, dementia, delirium, sleep disturbances in elderly, immobility syndrome, pressure ulcers, cardiovascular risk in elderly, common neurological problems in elderly, and geriatric clinic system referrals and ways of communication between primary and secondary geriatric care services.
