The Geriatrics and Gerontology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, the first and only available academic geriatric department in Egypt and in the Middle East, held two condensed geriatrics and gerontology intensive educational courses in March.
The first course was held from 9 March 2010 to 11 March 2010. Targeting physicians, it was medically oriented dealing with theories of aging, comprehensive geriatric assessment, common medical disorders among the elderly including dementia, delirium, depression, atypical presentation of diseases, infection, falls, osteoporosis, urinary incontinence, pressure sores, poly-pharmacy, frailty, malnutrition, and ethical issues in elderly care.
The second course was targeting the health care providers working the geriatric field including nurses, social workers, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, in addition to the staff working in geriatric homes and caregivers. It was held from 16 March 2010 to 18 March 2010.The course was focusing more on the safe home age-friendly environment and the different models of elderly care in Egypt and around the world.
