By Hala Samir Sweed, Middle East

The Egyptian Higher Universities Committee approved the Geriatrics and Gerontology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, for the Diploma in Geriatric Medicine.

The Geriatrics and Gerontology Department, Faculty of Medicine, at Ain Shams University is the first and only available academic geriatric department in Egypt and in the Middle East. The department was established in 1984, providing both a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in geriatric medicine.

The approval for a geriatric medicine diploma came in July 2009. It aims to increase the spread of geriatric medicine as a specialty and increase the physicians’ awareness of geriatric medicine and needs. In addition, the care and services provided to the Egyptian elderly population is expected to be 11.5% of the total population by the year 2025 and 20.8% by the year 2050, an increase from previous years.

The registration for the first semester for the diploma started on October 2009. The diploma includes two years training course - 4 semesters (30 credit hours). Candidates, after passing the mid and final exams, will be provided the certificate of geriatric medicine diploma, and thus become geriatric medicine specialists.
