Creative Workshop Involves Costa Rican Seniors

By Luis Solano-Mora, Costa Rica

In summer 2009, the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica hosted a workshop with older adults of the Movement for Life Program (MOVI), a multidisciplinary and integrated program focused on the effects of physical activity. During this one-day workshop, older adults discussed various themes such as the aging process, stereotypes and myths in older age, human movement through the Latin American dance, self-esteem and self-care, barriers to get involved with physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

The workshop was very dynamic and included various group activities. As an example, participants designed and created a collage by assembling different materials (magazines, scissors, newspapers, glue, and markers), and the theme reflected their opinion about healthy habits to achieve successful aging. Another interesting creation was the development of a piece of art using deco patches materials that represent their answers to the question: "How am I?"

The meeting included session on the benefits of being physically active and the barriers that they observe in their daily living.

The workshop organizers found this meeting extremely appropriate to promote social, emotional, physical and intellectual well-being for older adults.

Professionals who are interested in learning more about this workshop can contact MBA Inés Revuelta (general coordinator) by e-mail at movimien@una.ac.cr.
