Submission Guidelines

1. The Journal of Intercollegiate Sports (JIS) welcomes a broad range of scholarly submissions related to sport in the context of higher education.  Contributions may be specifically about sport in college and university settings or about broader biological, medical, psychological, social, or philosophical factors that impact sport in higher education.  Articles from the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and professional fields will be accepted.  Submissions that are cross-disciplinary in nature and have practical applications are encouraged.

2. Articles should be written for an educated, lay readership and must be nontechnical in nature.  Accordingly, they should address topics of general interest and avoid the idiosyncratic issues and terminology of academic specializations.

3. Standard canons of good research will be honored in the review process.  Depending on the type of research being conducted, submissions must reflect good scientific procedure, the best practices of qualitative methodologies, and/or sustained and effective argumentation.  Submissions that are editorial or polemical in nature are not consistent with the mission of the journal.  On the other hand, well-researched and argued essays that either challenge or support the status quo in intercollegiate sports are welcome.

4. All submissions will be reviewed by a minimum of three referees using a blind review process.  The editor reserves the right to return manuscripts without full review if any submission does not comply with basic editorial and scholarly standards of the Journal of Intercollegiate Sports.

5. The preferred mode of submission is through the Human Kinetics ManuscriptCentral online review system, which expedites the review process.  Papers, preferably created in Word, should be submitted via ManuscriptCentral.  To submit papers online, visit the Manuscript Central web site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hk_jis, create an account, and follow the prompts to submit your paper.

6. Address all editorial inquiries to the editor, R. Scott Kretchmar, at rsk1@psu.edu

7. Because JIS uses a blind review process, the author’s name and institutional affiliation should appear only on the cover page, which should be uploaded as a file separate from the munuscript, and care should be taken to avoid self-identification in the text or notes.

8. Manuscripts should conform to the reference, endnote, and bibliographical style according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) fifth edition.  Manuscripts employing alternative formats will be accepted for review, although stylistic revision will be required before publication.
